Federation of St Kitts & Nevis

The Sustainable Farming through Landcare – Workshop in the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis will run from 18 – 25 May, 2018. Presenters will include professionals from CARDI – Caribbean Agriculture Research and Development Institute, Australian Landcare international and the University of Wolverhampton.

Training will focus on:

  • community development through networking
  • IT and Landcare image to improve knowledge transfer, logistics, co-operative marketing of farm produce
  • promoting biodiversity and ecotourism
  • soil and water conservation
  • pest animal control
  • managing Landcare projects
  • fund-raising – currently the course involves farmers, agricultural scientists and climate specialists; and potentially students from the country’s agriculture college

Aim of proposal:

We aim to bring people from (developing) Caribbean countries to St Kitts and Nevis to participate in this Landcare and sustainable farming training at Nevis and St Kitts. CARDI indicates that students will come from Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.

In particular, heads of farmers’ groups/cooperatives, community development committees e.g. the Paramin Development Committee in Trinidad – a mountainous farming community that experiences challenges with access to water for farming. Having persons such as these, including women, will serve well as a catalyst for knowledge transfer.
